The Clash Made The Right Choice This Time
Although listening to the lackluster official winner's song makes me feel like it would have been better to lose, The Clash 2024 made the right choice in selecting the winner. Naya Ambi was crowned the latest Grand Champion of the singing competition, besting Chloe Redondo in the final "One-on-One Clash."
This outcome made the most sense because, with no hate intended, the only guy left in the contest, Alfred Bogabil, posed no real threat at all. Angel D.'s best chance of winning revolved around the city ordinance on gender inclusivity and discrimination—it's debatable how marketable she would have been if she had won. Chloe was the only true threat to Naya. Although she was my top favorite to win at the start of the competition, she was eliminated early and made her way to the Final 4 by sneaking in through the Clash Back round. It would have been historic for her to be the first wildcard entry to win the competition, but that would have been a disservice to Naya's standout performances leading up to the finals.
GMA has a poor track record in finding a star from The Clash. The last winner with real potential was Golden CaƱedo from the first season, but she chose to live a normal life. Thea Astley from season 2 had all the makings of a star, yet they picked Jeremiah Tiangco over her, and now both have struggled to find success. Jessica Villarubin and Marian Osabel were decent choices for AllOutSundays, but that’s about it. The only reason Rex Baculfo won in season 5 was that they didn't want another girl on 'Queendom.' They created a girl group from contestants in season 1, but with the rise of 'BINI,' it has only made things harder for them. Maui Francisco from season 4 should be the one included in a P-Pop group alongside Season 5 graduate Lianna Castillo, whom they have pushed as the new Yasmine Kurdi, but they haven’t cast her on AllOutSundays. Their difficulty in finding stars led them to sign 'Idol Philippines' winner Zephanie.
Since the beginning of the 6th season, I’ve been saying that GMA needs to find stars, not just singers; they don’t need construction workers, online sellers, or ladyguards. GMA needs stars, and now that they have discovered potential stars in Naya and Chloe, they must ensure they don’t mess this up this time around.
