GMA's Two Garcias Trending In Opposite Directions

With the ever expanding GMA roster of stars its really hard for one to stay relevant at a given time. This has been more obvious for the two Garcia's of the network.

Other than the Garcia name there's really very little similarity between Maricris Garcia and Gabbi Garcia, most specially in their career trajectory. While the former continuously becoming irrelevant, the latter is fast track to success.

Gabbi is currently viewed as a prime star of GMA working on big projects only and is a regular cast of Sunday Pinasaya where she recently sung (or lipsynced that is) her much hyped debut single, she also has an upcomming primetime series early next year. Maricris on the other hand was last seen as a participant on a rather meaningless Jackpot & Poy in Eat Bulaga.

Maricris has worked her way to GMA, she was the third grand champion of Pinoy Pop Superstar and later became a member of the singing trio La Diva along with fellow PPS alumni Jonalyn Viray and Aicelle Santos. In the ensuing years the trio were portrayed as in the mix of top artists but not as quite at top as they were.
More unfortunate for Maricris, it may seem she has gotten the short end of the stick when the trio disbanded as she recieved lesser opportunities, basically watching Jonalyn Viray and Aicelle Santos enjoy more success as solo acts. It doesn't helped matters that GMA phased out its musical shows as it lost the platform to showcase singers. While she's often the voice of GMA themesongs and released an all digital album lately, however, non of it has changed the perception of Maricris. Thats because those projects were largely deflated by how GMA has rendered her irrelevant for far too long.
During Regine Velasquez Alcasid's R.3.0 concert, the Songbird performed with the top female singers of both GMA and ABS-CBN and gladly presented them as New Queens. Maricris was not part of the line up that included Julie Anne San Jose, and her former bandmates Aicelle and Jonalyn. Which was too bad considering years ago each member of La Diva was being viewed as the heir apparent to the Songbird's throne.

Although its easy to blame mismanagement of GMA and the people handling her career for Maricris' disappointing stint -- and that's undoubtfully a large part of it -- Maricris bears some responsibility aswell as she doesn't looked determined as when she was competing in Pinoy Pop Superstar and doesn't really do anything to keep herself afloat.
Of course it may not be a lost cause yet, perhaps she could take Jonalyn Viray's route who went from a network afterthought to platinum recording singer after moving to a different management. But it would take a concerted amount of effort to undo the damage that has been done.

Although Gabbi could act a little, sing a little and dance a little its very obvious that her main attributes is her looks.
Its no secret that looks does matter, specially in local showbiz where style almost everytime beat substance. But more importantly Gabbi has the backing of those who are in-charge.
So Unlike Maricris, Gabbi was handpicked by GMA for stardom. She was immediately been put on the top position as soon as she debuted on tv, getting big projects and leadroles after another. Winning the coveted role as one of the Sang'gres in Encantadia was a huge sign that the powers that be highly believes in her-- not to mention GMA shredding hundreds of thousands to make her 18th birthday a big showbiz event showed she is above any other current talent.
And just recently, she made her crossover to music aswell producing and singing her own song, while it maybe a brave move to do so, yet its because she knew she will have the backing of the entire GMA machine.
And with its top singer recently departed from its record company -- Gabbi will most likely be push as GMA's next top female singer for forseeable future.

There is no doubt that Gabbi is currently the apple of the eye of the people in-charge and while her initial push was largely because of her looks, but to her credit she make the most out the opportunities. Moreover, Gabbi carries herself like a true star and seemed also mastered self-promotion. So its fathomable the she's the Garcia that is trending upward.
